How We Teach Our Students

The Arthur Murray Centres teaching is on a scholastic basis, and degrees of dancing achieved are varied. Instruction progresses through Student Introductory & Variety Programs, and Associate or Full Programs in Bronze, Silver, Gold, Gold Bar and Gold Star Standards. This system is called the Medalist System and is used worldwide. Courses are designed for people desiring instruction in either Social or Competition Styles. Why 1929?

On the cusp of a new decade, Nineteen-Twenty-Nine was a year of great change…

The 1920s had presented a massive cultural evolution whose prohibition times exploded with Speakeasies & Flappers! With people freed from heavy Victorian rules and customs — guys and gals merrily shed their social shackles by cutting a rug and dancing the Charleston.

The 1930s were harder times. The Great Depression took a toll, but thankfully they had SWING to keep the joy in the hearts of many. People could joyously dance for just a few cents for the whole night to a live big band. The hot jazz hotbed of Harlem, NYC brought us LINDY HOP, the diamond in the rough, as well as the start of social integration in the US, as the Savoy Ballroom was the first place that white and black people could dance together. Frankie Manning and Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers revolutionised partner dancing and gave it to the world.

Keith first started learning the skills needed to breakdance when he started to compete in gymnastic competitions at the age of 6. He went on to win 2 Floor Gold Medals for Xavier College and came in 1st for the Team Events for the same year.

He started to get an interest in breakdancing when he attended the finals of the X-Games where legendary breakdance champions Wickid Force were competing in the finals.

After seeing this, he decided that his mission was to become part of Wickid Force.

From 2000, Keith both learned the craft of breakdancing and worked with the Wickid Force crew until 2005 where he was inducted as a full member into one of the world’s top breakdancing crew.

Away from competing in the breakdancing world, Keith has turned his eye to choreography, judging and also appearing in television commercials and music videos.

Hip Hop

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It is very popular with girls & boys, and it includes a wide range of styles created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. Each class will develop the hip hop style and various hip hop routines throughout the year. Our dance instructors are committed to giving each student attention while also moving the class forward. Led by a dedicated teacher of acrobatics, our Acro class is designed specifically for dancers. It is a genre of dance which incorporates elements of jazz, gymnastics, balancing and contortion. Students learn Acrobatic tricks such as handstands, cartwheels and aerials, chest stands, elbow stands and walkovers. Trick movements are usually executed slowly to emphasise gracefulness, body lines and picturesque extension.

We offer more depth and variety to your dancing and creates a much more versatile dancer. Students develop a good foundation of strength and flexibility. Tap dance is the joy of making music and rhythms with tap shoes. We teach fundamental steps and tap patterns that build up to more advanced moves and sequences as the year progresses. Contemporary & Lyrical

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance with specific techniques that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor.

Lyrical may consist of many genres, including pop, rock and hip hop. Powerful, expressive songs are often used in lyrical dance to give dancers a chance to express a range of strong emotions through their dancing. Movements in lyrical dance are characterised by fluidity and grace, with the dancer flowing seamlessly from one move to another, holding finishing steps as long as possible,

We teach quality dance to children and adults. We ensure that all our students are learning the fundamental principles of dance technique in a safe and professional manner, whether they are attending one class a week or many. KiX aims to nurture the passion and enjoyment of dance and promote confidence in all students.

Our class sizes are small, with no more than 12-14 children in a class, depending on the space allocated.

We pride ourselves on having age-appropriate costumes, music and choreography. ALL COSTUMES ARE HIRED.

KiX offers composite, as well as individual, classes in ballet, jazz and tap. We also have classes in contemporary, hip hop, acrobatics, musical theatre and singing. As dance is very demanding on the body, conditioning/strength work forms a part of all classes, even in the Little KiX class, we start with an obstacle course warm-up. Private dance lessons are also available.

Throughout the year KiX students usually work towards performing in a half year casual concert, an end of year formal concert and most students will participate in examinations. Students may also choose to participate in competitions or workshops throughout the year.

Our Director Natalie is an Associate Member of Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) and has been teaching dance for more than 30 years. ATOD offers a comprehensive syllabus in ballet, contemporary, national character, jazz, hip hop, tap, street tap and musical theatre. Natalie is a certified member of ‘Imagine A Place To Be Me’ a program specifically designed for preschool children. She is certified to teach Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT). PBT is an innovative program designed to train dancers in muscle memory to improve technique, flexibility and longevity in dance, while gaining a greater awareness of their muscles and how to use them properly to achieve their goals in ballet. Natalie is also a certified teacher of acrobatics, achieving certification through The Acrobatic Dance Association. She keeps up to date with what is going on in the world of dance and regularly attends seminars, workshops and courses to ensure students are receiving quality training at all levels.

She takes a highly intuitive approach based on over fourteen years of teaching, closely monitoring her students’ progress and adjusting course as necessary. First, find a free online metronome so you can determine music speeds. You can click on a certain number on the metronome, which should be the song’s basic beat. For your warm-up and cool down, you’ll want music that’s around 88 – 100. For your 20-minute full aerobic time, choose music that has a metronome marking between 108 – 112 for your step together dancing, and 104 for your leg lift dancing. Pick music you love that makes you feel happy.
