1929 Studios – Dance Class Studios Melbourne

Swing dancing IS swing music. The dance and music are the same things. It is rhythm, melody, story, energy, teamwork, and a range of human emotions. We are focused on the first swing dance, Lindy Hop, which originated in the African American community.
1929 offers a unique, progressive learning environment for beginners. We mix it up each month, offering different classic basic steps.
We are focused on what matters: connecting with the music, connecting with your partner, and having fun!
We are committed to our students and staff’s safety, who are bound by our Code of Conduct.
We aim to provide fair compensation to teachers and staff, whilst keeping dancing affordable to all.
We’re committed to sustaining the live music experience for swing dancers.
We’re committed to honouring the elders and originators of the Lindy Hop, and recognising its African American roots.
On the cusp of a new decade, Nineteen-Twenty-Nine was a year of great change…
The 1920s had presented a massive cultural evolution whose prohibition times exploded with Speakeasies & Flappers! With people freed from heavy Victorian rules and customs — guys and gals merrily shed their social shackles by cutting a rug and dancing the Charleston.
The 1930s were harder times. The Great Depression took a toll, but thankfully they had SWING to keep the joy in the hearts of many. People could joyously dance for just a few cents for the whole night to a live big band. The hot jazz hotbed of Harlem, NYC brought us LINDY HOP, the diamond in the rough, as well as the start of social integration in the US, as the Savoy Ballroom was the first place that white and black people could dance together. Frankie Manning and Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers revolutionised partner dancing and gave it to the world.

Dance Habit is a child-safe organisation. We are committed to ensuring all young people in our community are heard, valued, protected and empowered.
We think dance is for everyone!
Founder and Director, Megan Jessop says
“Growing up, dance was everything to me. I was a child who struggled to make friends at school, but dance taught me how to be patient and kind, to accept and love myself, to embrace a challenge and to never give up on my dreams, whatever they might be. The dance opened up a world of friendships, many of which I still treasure 25 years down the track! I want everyone to experience this journey, and it’s never too late to start.”
Dance often carries a stigma whereby only the students with a natural ability or potential get any attention. Too often, we see and hear of children (and adults) disappearing into the shadows of a dance class, becoming just a number because they may never “make it” as a dancer. Here’s where we come in!
At Dance Habit, we understand that there is so much more to dance classes than just learning steps. Our students grow in danceability, but more importantly, they grow in confidence and belief in themselves. They learn to respect and trust and are surrounded by teachers and families who genuinely care about them.

Lyrical may consist of many genres, including pop, rock and hip hop. Powerful, expressive songs are often used in lyrical dance to give dancers a chance to express a range of strong emotions through their dancing. Can dancing help you lose weight?
You might think of dancing as something you just do at the club on Saturday nights. While dancing is a great way to unwind and have fun, it has so many other benefits, too.
Dancing is an excellent way to exercise, burn fat and calories, and lose weight. So, if you’re looking to add some new moves to your workout routine, read on to learn how dancing can benefit your weight loss efforts.
Many celebrities use this as a form of workout. If they have to perform somewhere, they even skip their daily gym, knowing they are covered because they dance it out!
Dancing moves your entire body, making it fit and flexible. Plus, it makes you feel good. There are several dance forms, and each one takes a different toll on your body- for each routine, the calorie burn is different.
How to Lose 10 Pounds by Dancing
It’s important to avoid increasing your caloric intake when you start your dancing exercise program. If you add more calories, you’ll either maintain or gain weight. Your body might want more calories because you’ll be increasing your metabolism. You can count calories and use measuring cups and spoons, or you can just make a log of exactly what you are eating and then replicate it in the weeks following. You can also focus on food groups and food exchanges to track your calories while eying amounts instead of measuring them. An ounce of chicken, for instance, is about the size of a deck of cards.
Managing Dance Time
To lose weight by dancing, you should strive for at least 20 minutes with an accelerated heart-rate at least 4-5 days a week. You should start with a 5-minute warm-up and end with a 5-minute cool-down which means 30 minutes, 4-5 times a week. Rather than watching the clock, manage your time through music as described in the next section. Set the alarm for your total dancing time on your cell phone or a clock that you can then hide. It will make the time go faster.
Calorie Burning Dance Moves
The key to burning calories is to move your whole body. The best dance moves include the old standby move of a step with one foot and then bringing the other foot next to the first one and then going the opposite way. Add arm movements that go at least up to the shoulders, and your heart will start pumping. You can also jog around the room. You’ll be surprised how tired you get if you have your legs shoulder-width apart and you just twist and alternate bending each leg with your arms doing the washing machine rotation movement at chest level. If you mix in leg lifts and knee lifts bringing your opposite elbow to the knee, you’re working your legs and abs. Then it’s all about creativity and keeping moving. You can just gyrate and swing your arms like a mad person. No one needs to see you.
First, find a free online metronome so you can determine music speeds. You can click on a certain number on the metronome, which should be the song’s basic beat. For your warm-up and cool down, you’ll want music that’s around 88 – 100. For your 20-minute full aerobic time, choose music that has a metronome marking between 108 – 112 for your step together dancing, and 104 for your leg lift dancing. Pick music you love that makes you feel happy.
Options for dancing and weight loss
There are many different types of dance, all of which offer health benefits and the potential for weight loss.
Many gyms offer dance classes, and there are also plenty of online dance videos you can try to see what form of dance feels right for you.
If you prefer something less structured, you can also just crank up your favourite music in your living room and dance around for 30 minutes or more. If you’re moving and getting your heart rate up, you’re reaping the rewards and burning calories.
Most common marked areas in your body while dancing:
Core muscles are the deepest muscles of your body. Depending on the type of dance chosen, some of the steps and moves will employ the core muscles.
Even though most dances focus on your lower body, you’re also moving your arms to the beat.
The dance routine will make you make moves that work your lower body, including your thigh muscles and hamstrings.
Hip hop, belly dancing and ballet, among others, include moves that engage the buttocks.
Dance uses your core muscles, including those in your back.
Also helps improve:
Most of the dance workouts include moves that improve your flexibility.
Raises heart rate
Dancing raises your heart rate, improves your breathing. The more upbeat the dancing style, the better it is for your heart.
Even though you aren’t lifting weights, you are lifting yourself, up- bodyweight counts, which helps build muscle strength.
Depending on the style of dance you choose, you can improve your heart, joints, overall strength, balance and coordination, and a sense of wellbeing. If you can’t afford classes, try a dance workout DVD or follow an online video at home. Happy Dancing!
