Treatments
Foot care in general
Corns, calluses, athlete's foot, fungal nails, and other lower limb skin and nail diseases are among the disorders we evaluate and treat.
Orthotic treatment
Orthotic therapy is a type of physical therapy that incorporates the use of orthotics. We can treat a number of foot, ankle, leg, and lower back issues by improving lower-limb biomechanics.
Fingernail surgery
Nail surgery can effectively treat chronic ingrown toenails. In our clinic, all nail surgery procedures are conducted under local anaesthesia.
Diabetes foot examinations
We offer both complete diabetes foot examinations and continuing diabetes foot treatment. Diabetics should have their feet checked by a podiatrist at least once a year.
Podiatry in sports
The practice of treating athletes' feet is known as sports podiatry. We assess and treat all sports-related foot and ankle injuries in persons of all ages. Among them are Achilles' damage, ankle sprains and strains, heel discomfort, metatarsalgia, shin splints, and other ailments.

Kingsford Foot Clinic - Podiatrists Bayside, Melbourne
03 9532 7601
FEATURING A VERY HIGH STANDARD OF CARE
When patients receive the necessary therapy and care, podiatrists can help with symptom relief as well as the identification and treatment of more significant issues.
IN THE CASE OF GROWN NAIL TREATMENTS (INFECTED TOES)
One of the most popular misunderstandings about ingrown toenail therapy is that it is unpleasant and incapacitating. In fact, the therapy is delivered with minimal discomfort; the operation is performed in the offices of our podiatrists; it lasts about an hour; and the patient is able to walk immediately after it is finished.
ORTHOTICS (FOOT ORTHOSES) (FOOT ORTHOSES)
Orthotics or orthotics are shoe inserts that are specially designed to support, align, or improve the function of the foot in some way. These are designed to provide bodily support from the feet all the way up to the head. This alleviates tension on the skeletal system, which comprises our muscles, tendons, and joints, and allows us to move more effectively overall.
TREATMENTS FOR CORTISONE (CORTICOSTEROIDS)
Cortisone treatments are often used to help with the decrease of pain and inflammation in certain areas of the body. This corticosteroid drug is most commonly provided via injection into the body's joints, most commonly the hips, knees, and ankles, in conjunction with a local anaesthetic.
FAQs About Podiatrists
Podiatrists are medical specialists who help with problems that affect your feet or lower legs. They can treat injuries and complications from ongoing health issues like diabetes. You might hear them called a podiatric physician or doctor of podiatric medicine.
A podiatrist is a doctor who specialises in all things related to the foot and ankle, including foot pain, abnormal growths, injuries, diabetic foot issues, and nerve damage. They not only diagnose and treat existing foot and ankle conditions, but they can also address underlying health issues that may be causing your symptoms. Moreover, they can help you prevent future foot pain and injuries you may be susceptible to.
Many people put off seeing a podiatrist and instead attempt to self-treat at home – hoping it will resolve itself. Others don’t bother going to a physician because they think they simply need to accept their foot condition as something they have to live with and that treatment isn’t possible or feasible.
The following is a partial list of the many health conditions that a podiatrist can treat:
- Ingrown toenails
- Corns
- Calluses
- Hammertoes
- Bunions
- Athlete’s foot
- Warts
- Toenail fungus
- Heel spurs
- Heel pain
- Fallen arches and flatfoot
- Plantar fasciitis
- Sprains and strains of the foot and ankle
- Achilles tendonitis
- Foot fractures
- Peripheral and diabetic neuropathy
- Foot and ankle pain
- Numbness and tingling
Lower back pain and knee pain are often caused by foot and ankle issues. Problems with your feet and ankles can throw your body off balance and cause joint issues.
Podiatrists also have specialised knowledge and training to pinpoint the source of the issue – if it is indeed based in your foot and ankle – and prescribe custom orthotics to address the pain and relieve the symptoms effectively. In addition, practising and licensed podiatrists are up-to-date on the latest techniques to relieve symptoms of foot and ankle issues.
Podiatrists treat people of any age for many foot-related conditions, including:
- Fractures and sprains. Podiatrists regularly treat these common injuries when they affect a foot or ankle. They also work in sports medicine, treating foot problems athletes have and recommending ways to avoid them.
- Bunions and hammertoes. These are problems with the bones in your feet. A bunion happens when the joint at the base of your big toe gets bigger or knocked out of place. That makes the toe bend toward the others. A hammertoe does not bend the right way.
- Nail disorders. These include issues like an infection in your nail caused by a fungus or an ingrown toenail. That’s when a corner or side of a nail grows into your toe instead of straight out.
- Diabetes. This is a condition in which your body either doesn’t make a hormone called insulin or doesn’t use it the way it should. Insulin helps you digest sugar. Diabetes can damage the nerves in your feet or legs, and you might have trouble getting enough blood to your feet.
- Diabetes can cause serious complications. More than 65,000 people a year need to have a foot amputated -- removed by a doctor -- because of diabetes. A podiatrist can help prevent that. If you have diabetes, make sure to get any soreness or callus on your feet.
- Arthritis. This results from inflammation, swelling, and wear and tear on your joints. Each foot has 33 joints. A podiatrist might recommend physical therapy, drugs, or special shoes or inserts to help with your arthritis. Surgery also might be an option if other treatments don’t work well for you.
- Growing pains. If your child’s feet point inward or look flat or their toes don’t line up right, a podiatrist might be able to help. They could recommend exercises, insoles, or braces. Or they might recommend surgery.
- Heel pain. A common cause of heel pain is heel spurs, a buildup of calcium at the bottom of your heel bone. You can get them from running, ill-fitting shoes, or being overweight. Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. Sports and nonsupportive shoes are usually to blame. Overpronation, meaning your foot bends in or out too far when you walk, is often a cause. It, too, can affect athletes, as can Achilles tendinitis, which causes pain at the back of your heel where this tendon attaches. Treatment often starts with over-the-counter pain meds and may include shoe inserts called orthotics. Some people need surgery.
- Morton’s neuroma. Nerve problems between the third and fourth bones of your foot can cause pain, burning, and a feeling that there’s something in your shoe. It usually affects runners. Tight shoes and overpronation make it worse. A podiatrist can give you shots for inflammation and pain and help you find an orthotic. You might need surgery to remove it.
Podiatrists have to understand the lower leg structures fully, but they must also know how chronic health conditions affect the feet, ankles, and toenails. In many cases, proper foot treatment will involve topical treatments and footwear adjustments but diet modifications, exercise recommendations, and physical therapy.
Podiatrists help their patients by:
- Performing thorough examinations. A problem in the feet can be caused by footwear or trauma, but it can also originate somewhere else in the body. Podiatrists conduct physical examinations of the lower extremities and consider systemic factors that could contribute to foot and ankle pain.
- Ordering diagnostic tests. A podiatrist will often perform diagnostics such as X-rays or lab tests to understand the patient’s ailment fully. These tests allow your podiatrist to make the most effective treatment plan.
- Recommending treatment plans. Patient education is key to overcoming a foot problem for good. Your podiatrist will discuss your condition and potential treatment options, including conservative measures (such as orthotic devices or medications) and more complex remedies (such as surgery).
- Preventing future suffering. Once you have been treated for a condition, your podiatrist will focus on preventing problems from coming back. You may need regular visits to inspect diabetic feet, treat fungal nails, or allow the doctor to monitor your healing after surgery.

Our podiatrists, on the other hand, have the expertise and experience needed to evaluate this disease and design a treatment plan that will help you recover and get back on your feet as soon as possible.
Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs are the two most common causes of adult-onset heel discomfort. Treatment may include education about suitable footwear, stretching exercises, anti-inflammatory medication, strapping, exercise modification, and orthotics.
Children are also susceptible to heel pain. This illness usually appears between the ages of 8 and 13, when youngsters begin to become increasingly involved in extracurricular activities. A disorder known as Sever's Disease, which is related to growth, can frequently cause heel pain in active children. Your podiatrist will be able to diagnose the issue, treat it, and educate you on how to avoid it in the future.
