    About Japanese Melbourne Language School

JM has been operating as a Japanese language school in Melbourne for 10 years. We are an Australian school with a Japanese heart. All of our teachers are native Japanese.

The school started with an Ikea LACK table in a storeroom from 2007 to now occupying the top level of a building in CBD with 11 classrooms. We are the first school to populate the ‘direct teaching’ method to Melbourne. The direct-teaching method immerses the students in a full Japanese environment.

As most Japanese don’t speak English in Japan, our student will learn to adapt easier and improve faster. Different people learn Japanese for different reasons: to prepare for a personal or business trip to Japan, to impress your Japanese father-in-law, to pick up another language as a hobby, to understand manga and anime, or simply to find out what exactly is an Oyako-don.

Rest assured, we have the right course to get you on track.

    FAQs About Learning Japanese

A good tutor can help you get the most out of your study time and make real progress in your language learning. But how do you find the right tutor for you?

Hiring a tutor for the first time can feel a bit intimidating because there are so many choices. There are only three main factors to consider when looking for a Japanese tutor who will meet your needs when it comes down to it.

    Good Rapport

You need to feel comfortable with your tutor because you will make mistakes in front of them. It is just a part of learning. They will need to push their limits. And they will need to correct you. If you are not comfortable with the tutor, then the relationship can end up feeling adversarial, which is not conducive to learning.

Look for a tutor whose lesson style, personality, and making corrections match what works best for you. To be clear, remember that you are not looking to hire a best friend. You are looking to hire someone who can guide you. This means you need to think about what is best for you, not what you prefer. Looking for a tutor who seems like one of your friends will not be helpful in the long run.

So what should you base your decision on? Think back to the teachers you learned the most from in school, and you will have an idea of what to look for.

    Knowledge Base and Level

It is critical to know how much your tutor knows. If you are starting out, an upperclassman in a Japanese university program may be a fine tutor and save you money. If you are a more advanced student or looking to develop true fluency, you will need a native speaker.

You should also consider the specific knowledge that you want to learn. For example, if you are going to Japan to study at a university, you may want to make sure that your tutor knows the vocabulary of your subject matter. After all, how many of us know the specialized vocabulary of medical sciences, chemistry, art or psychology in our language? Make sure your tutor can help you meet your specific goals.

    Compatible Schedules

Having a tutor available at the same time that you are might seem like a no-brainer, but it is important to consider how their availability works within your schedule.

You should also make sure that you have a tutor willing to work with the amount of study you can put in. Finding time to study each week can be a challenge, and you will need a tutor who can deal with your pace, however, slow it may be.

This is something you should discuss when you are talking to prospective tutors. Ask them their expectations and see if they are willing to work with someone who can only dedicate a limited amount of time to learning.

Typically, the best way to learn Japanese is through language immersion. While it’s possible to get by with little or no Japanese language skills in metropolitan areas, you will miss out on a lot that Japan has to offer as well as frequently find yourself in a tight spot when dealing with day-to-day living situations like filling out documents at city hall, going to the post office, or trying to communicate with Japanese coworkers effectively.

If you live in Tokyo, we highly recommend taking a Japanese language course to help kickstart or refine your fluency.

There are three writing systems: katakana, hiragana, and kanji. Hiragana and Katakana are phonetic alphabets. Unlike English, which treats vowels and consonants separately (and has multiple pronunciations for many letters), phonetic alphabets are always written and pronounced in one specific way.

    Hiragana and Katakana

With hiragana and Katakana, the vowels a, i, u, e, and o are best visualized in five rows, and the consonants are added across the top to create a grid (the table below presents the corresponding vowels on the far right side, as Japanese is read vertically right to left).

Hiragana is the first Japanese writing system that children learn—it’s the most basic writing system in Japan. In the table above, it’s easy to identify hiragana because of the alphabet’s more rounded shapes (presented on the left side of each square). On the other hand, Katakana is sharper in appearance (presented on the right side of each square).

Unlike hiragana and katakana, kanji is pictographic. Each symbol, or moji, stands for a concept rather than a sound. For example, in the table above, you can see the kanji 一、二、三 (1, 2, 3). There can be several pronunciations or readings for these symbols. The kanji 一 can be pronounced ichi or hito, but the meaning (one) stays the same.

When you teach yourself Japanese, you decide what to learn and how to learn it. This is the most important reason for teaching yourself.

You’ll often feel that you have something specific that you want to learn. At some point, after learning a bit of grammar, you typically want to start focusing on vocabulary.

The importance of the Japanese language is spoken by over one-hundred forty million in Japan alone. It is also a natural second language for people in Chinese and Korean speaking countries.

Despite Japan’s growth being outshined by neighbouring countries like China and India. Japan still has the second-largest economy in the world, following China.

    About JA

It all started with an IKEA table.

In 2006, our first classroom was the storeroom of a manga cafe, just enough to fit a white LACK table, four stools, a whiteboard with wobbly wheels, and a closet to store textbooks.

Fifteen years later, we now occupy the top level of a building with eleven classrooms, smack bang in the middle of Melbourne CBD.

We have taught families and students, Apple geniuses, ATO managers, council members, and even a Channel Nine news anchor. We are well-versed in engaging students from all backgrounds, culturally and geographically.

Thanks to (no sarcasm here) COVID-19, we moved our Japanese lessons online, and to our surprise, many students enjoyed it.

Particularly those who had to travel long and far. The students who hated coming into the city, the lack of parking, the introverts. Some even get to learn with their friends/families from different countries. Students who prefer to learn in their pyjamas, in the comfort of their own home.

And then we thought, hang on, if we can teach remotely to outer Melbourne, we can also teach to the whole of Australia.

    Even the world.

And thus, Japanese Australia was born.

Our goal is to be the bridge between Japan, Australia, and the rest of the world.
